WINDOW BUYING GUIDE
Replacement window costs: what changes your quote?
Two houses can have the same number of windows and need very different quotations. The sizes, opening arrangements, glass and work around each frame all matter. This guide helps you prepare a useful enquiry and compare written proposals without relying on a headline price.
IN THIS GUIDE
Start with a room-by-room window list
Count complete window openings, rather than individual panes of glass. A bedroom window with three panes may be one frame containing a mix of fixed and opening sections. Describe that arrangement, because a pane count alone leaves too much open to interpretation.
For each room, note an approximate width and height, the floor level and what you want to change. You do not need to take manufacturing measurements to make an initial enquiry. If an opening is awkward to reach, leave it to be assessed rather than climbing or leaning out to measure it.
- Room and approximate opening size
- Fixed and opening sections you would like
- Frame colour inside and outside
- Privacy glass, bay windows or access concerns
- Whether you want one room, several windows or a whole-house proposal
Compare the complete specification
A window quotation should identify the proposed frame system, opening layout, glass and hardware. Ask for the details behind labels such as “energy efficient” or “secure”: which configuration is being quoted and which performance evidence applies to it?
Compare the internal and external finishes as well. A colour on the outside with white on the inside is a different choice from a matching finish on both faces. Handles, obscured glass and decorative details can also change the proposal.
| Part of the quote | What to check |
|---|---|
| Frames and openings | System, dimensions, fixed panes, opening sashes and handle positions |
| Glazing | Glass specification, privacy requirements and the performance information provided |
| Appearance | Internal and external colour, frame detail, handles and any decorative bars |
| Installation work | Access, removal, disposal, trims, sills and the agreed extent of making good |
| Commercial terms | Total payable, VAT treatment, payment stages, exclusions and written warranty terms |
Include the work around the window
A like-for-like frame replacement and a project that changes the size of a wall opening involve different work. Describe any proposed alterations at the start. A bay window, difficult handling route or restricted access also deserves its own discussion.
Ask what happens to old frames and glass, which sills and trims are included, and where finishing work stops. Internal decoration, damaged plaster and external finishes should be addressed explicitly in the written scope. Do not assume that an attractive finished photograph defines what every quotation includes.
Use your budget on the decisions that matter to you
Explain the problem you want to solve before selecting upgrades. That could be an awkward handle, a tired external appearance, privacy in a bathroom or a layout that no longer works for the room. Ask for separate options where a design choice affects the price, so you can judge the difference.
If replacing every window is outside your current budget, ask whether a phased proposal is practical. Agree how the later windows could match, and request clarity on how access and installation arrangements would work for each phase. Future availability and future prices should not be assumed.
Put competing quotes on the same basis
Compare the same number of windows, opening patterns, finishes and installation scope. A cheaper total may reflect a different product or fewer included tasks; a higher total needs a clear explanation too. Ask questions about any missing item before making your decision.
There is no price table here because a useful figure needs a defined window and fitting scope. Send Urban your postcode, rough window list and priorities to start a quote for your own home.
Useful questions.
Can you quote from approximate sizes?
Approximate sizes and a room-by-room list are useful for an initial discussion. Any initial figure needs its assumptions explained. Final sizes, product details and fitting scope must be confirmed before an order is agreed.
Is replacing the glass an alternative to replacing the whole window?
It can be worth asking when the frame and operating parts are still in suitable condition. Misting between panes may concern the sealed glass unit. Explain what you can see and how the window operates so the appropriate work can be assessed.
Does a window quote include decorating?
Check the written scope. Removal, trims, plaster repairs, decoration and disposal should be described clearly rather than assumed to be included in a general installation price.
