WINDOW PROJECT CHECKLIST
Your replacement-window quote and fitting checklist
You can start a window enquiry before you know every measurement or product detail. Use this checklist to explain what you need, understand the proposal and agree the practical arrangements. The steps below are questions to work through with your installer; your own written agreement defines the service included.
IN THIS GUIDE
1. Tell us which windows you want to change
Start with your postcode, the rooms involved and the reason for replacing the windows. Mention whether you want a similar appearance or a new colour and opening arrangement. Rough sizes help, but there is no need to take final manufacturing measurements yourself.
Describe what is happening now: a handle is difficult to turn, a frame feels draughty, glass is misted between the panes or the layout limits how you use the room. That description helps focus the discussion without assuming replacement is the answer to every symptom.
- Postcode and the number of complete window openings
- Approximate sizes or a simple room-by-room list
- Preferred style, colour and any privacy glazing
- Bay windows, upper floors or difficult access
- Your preferred timing and whether the project may be phased
2. Establish what needs checking at the property
Ask how the openings will be assessed and who will confirm the final dimensions. Existing frames, surrounding finishes, access and any proposed alterations need to be understood alongside the new window design. An initial conversation or estimate should not leave you unsure about what still needs verification.
Explain anything that could affect fitting or handling: narrow paths, steps, limited parking, locked side access or a route through furnished rooms. If you plan to change the wall opening rather than replace a frame within it, make that clear from the start.
3. Check the design and scope before ordering
Read the written proposal window by window. Check the viewing direction used on drawings so that the opening side is understood correctly. Confirm fixed and opening sections, handle positions, frame colours and any privacy glass rather than relying on a conversation from memory.
Ask for a clear list of included work and exclusions. Confirm the total payable, VAT treatment, payment stages and what needs to happen before manufacturing or fitting arrangements are agreed. Request the applicable warranty and aftercare terms in writing, including any conditions.
- Final window schedule and agreed specification
- Removal and disposal of existing frames and glass
- Sills, trims and the extent of internal and external making good
- Responsibilities for any associated building work or approvals
- Written commercial, warranty and aftercare terms
4. Agree the fitting-day arrangements
Once the proposed work and date are agreed, ask what access the installers need and which preparations are your responsibility. Discuss curtains, blinds, nearby furniture, parking and anything fragile around the openings. Ask how floors and rooms will be protected and how each working area will be left.
Tell the installer about children, pets, mobility needs or rooms that are especially important to keep accessible. Confirm the expected sequence and how changes will be communicated. Avoid planning other trades around an assumed installation date or duration; obtain the arrangements for your specific project.
5. Check operation and keep the paperwork together
At handover, ask to be shown how to operate the handles, locks, opening sections and any fitted restrictors or ventilators. Look over the agreed finishing work together and record questions or outstanding items so there is a shared understanding of what happens next.
Keep the final specification, invoice, care instructions and written warranty terms together. Confirm what installation paperwork is applicable and who will provide it, together with the contact route for aftercare. Memberships, certification and guarantees should be evidenced for the business and work involved rather than inferred from a website badge.
Useful questions.
Do I need exact measurements to contact Urban?
No. Start with the rooms, approximate sizes if available and what you want to improve. Final dimensions and specification need to be confirmed as part of the agreed project process.
How long will replacement windows take to fit?
The number and type of windows, access and finishing work affect the arrangements. Ask for a project-specific fitting plan and confirm the date and expected duration before making preparations.
Will the installer remove my blinds and decorate afterwards?
Agree those responsibilities before ordering. Ask specifically about blinds, curtains, old-frame removal, disposal, trims, plaster repairs and decoration so the written scope reflects what you expect.
What happens after I request a quote?
Your enquiry gives Urban the details needed to discuss your project. Ask which information or property checks are needed next, how the written proposal will be provided and what is still subject to confirmation.
